On the Deccan Plateau, nine hundred metres up, the air stays cool even when the plains below are burning. In 1537 a local chief named Kempe Gowda raised a mud fort here and dug tanks to hold the monsoon rain. Everything that followed came from people arriving: sultans who planted a garden of roses, British soldiers who built a second town beside the first, gardeners who carry a tower of jasmine through the night, scientists, factory engineers, and, in the last forty years, millions who came to write software. Across twenty chapters, this guide follows them through the lakes and palaces, the old market streets and the parade grounds, the laboratories and the coffee counters of Bengaluru. The city was never finished. It is still being built by whoever arrived most recently.
