A town enclosed by mountains on three sides and the sea on the fourth. More than eight hundred years ago, Minamoto no Yoritomo chose this easily defended ground for a city of warriors. Passes cut through the hills, tombs carved into cliffs, a harbor built from piled stones: the marks of the landscape and of human hands remain all over town. The shrine of Hachimangu and the avenue of Wakamiya-oji, Zen temples and a bamboo garden, a Great Buddha that lost its roof, a shore where the Enoden train runs.
