Only the center of the threshold dips low. At the entrance to Taoyuan's Jingfu Temple, your footsteps overlap with two hundred years of others'. The chisel marks left on Daxi's building façades, the ash of characters burned at Shengji Pavilion, the height marks carved into the walls of a military dependents' village. Guided only by the fact that a hand once touched them, we walk from temple to old street, from tea fields to irrigation ponds, and into the steam rising over the night market. The twenty-eight chapters begin not with a timeline, but with the movement of someone's fingers. Try turning the first corner just as the griddles begin to sizzle.
