In a basin in central Java, a mountain of stone rises out of the morning mist. Twelve hundred years ago, two million blocks of andesite were stacked by hand into one of the largest Buddhist monuments in the world: Borobudur. Its pilgrim path begins at a hidden base carved with people swayed by desire, passes through galleries that tell the life of Prince Siddhartha, climbs to bare circular terraces, and ends at an empty central stupa. It slept for a thousand years beneath volcanic ash and jungle, was rediscovered in 1814, and was brought back by taking apart and resetting a million stones, one by one. Across fifteen chapters, the story is told through the hands of stonemasons, pilgrims and restorers. Why is this mountain of stone called a prayer you climb on foot?
