The Central Stupa: An Answer Called Emptiness

At the top of the nine tiers, there was nothing. No — to be precise, what was there was nothing itself. The reliefs telling the life of the Buddha, the footsteps of pilgrims bound for enlightenment: none of it continues this far. The great bell-shaped tower that crowns Borobudur is the central stupa. For a long time, scholars have asked what was once enshrined within its sealed stone walls. A statue of the Buddha? Sacred relics? Or was it never meant to hold anything at all? An unfinished Buddha, abandoned half-carved, was found inside the stone walls, and the question only sank deeper. And yet perhaps the very lack of an answer is the answer this place gives. Traced back from the summit, the road that leads here reveals a single direction. On the lowest tiers, human figures swayed by desire were carved in stone. In the middle galleries, the journeys and teachings of the Buddha were told with painstaking care. Up on the circular terraces, Buddhas wrapped in lattices sat in simple silence. The spoken words grow fewer and fewer; the forms slowly come undone. The whole monument was one long, drawn breath — from countless stories toward a single silence. Arupadhatu — the world beyond form. On the summit that bears this name, the ridgelines of Java float in the morning light, mist fills the valleys, and far away a volcano breathes quietly. The mason who closed the last stone of this tower must have known what he left inside — or that he left nothing at all. He never wrote that answer down for anyone. The harder a heart tries to fill itself, the heavier it grows. The emptiness of the stupa says so not in words, but in the stillness of stone. At the end of laying down, one by one, everything once held tight, there was only the open sky.
