"Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara" is a serial property comprising eight sites in Nara City, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Cultural Heritage site in 1998. The property encompasses Tōdai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, Kasuga Grand Shrine, Kasugayama Primeval Forest, Gangō-ji, Yakushi-ji, Tōshōdai-ji, and the Heijō Palace Site — together, they carry forward the culture that flourished at the heart of Heijō-kyō, Japan's imperial capital in the eighth century, and the living history that has been passed down through the centuries ever since.
