When you step into Nara, the atmosphere of a capital city preserved across more than a millennium envelops you. Standing before the Great Buddha Hall of [Tōdai-ji](https://woud.io/nara/ja/nara_2), you may still sense the quiet prayers of the ancient people who gazed up at Rushana-butsu. At Kōfuku-ji, come face to face with the [Ashura statue](https://woud.io/nara/ja/nara_6) bearing three visages, and listen closely to the story written in its expression. The vermilion corridors of [Kasuga Taisha](https://woud.io/nara/ja/nara_7) and the vista of countless stone lanterns stretching into the distance form a landscape uniquely Nara's own, where nature and faith are woven together. Pass through the primeval forest of Kasugayama, and stand before the [Suzaku-mon](https://woud.io/nara/ja/nara_15) gate, faithfully reconstructed at the Heijō Palace site, to feel the expanse of the ancient capital brought back to life. As you journey through the eight component heritage sites, why not trace the culture of the Tenpyō era and the steps of those who have devoted themselves to preserving and passing it on?
